The Gift That Keeps Giving
By Cari Johnson
Of all the gifts I could receive, my favorites fall into two categories: gift certificates and magazine subscriptions. They just seem to be the gifts that keep giving.
I discovered my appreciation for magazine subscriptions a few years back when my friend ordered a year's worth of "Family Fun" for my Christmas gift. I was so excited the day I read the holiday post card that announced her gift. The excitement lingered as I awaited the first issue. I thoroughly enjoyed reading through the magazine when it arrived. And the greatest reward was that there would be another coming to my mailbox in just a few weeks! This process of anticipation and enjoyment cycled through that entire year. What a gift!
My fondness for gift certificates was realized when someone presented me with an envelope that stated (with very fancy lettering) that I was invited to enjoy a foot massage/pedicure at my leisure. "Ooh-la-la!" I thought, "I can't wait!" I carried the envelope around in my purse for the next several weeks. I would often think to myself, "Ooh, special, special me! I get to have a pedicure someday soon!" And as I waited to make the appointment for the "perfect" time, the joys of anticipation sustained me. After some time had passed, the day of pampering came and even more enjoyment was found. What a gift!
As another Christmas season comes to an end and a New Year begins, I am most thankful for the Gift that God has given through His Son, Christ Jesus. This favored gift falls into my two categories, as well. You see, God has promised that His mercies are new every morning. So as though you've been given a subscription to a daily publication, enjoy Him and His Word today, and look forward to the brand new glimpse of Himself that will be available tomorrow. And speaking of looking forward…Just as gift certificates are redeemed, we've been given a promise in God's Holy Spirit. It's not in an envelope that you carry around in your purse or wallet, but you can say to yourself with great confidence, "Ooh, special, special me! I will see Jesus face to face someday soon!" May the joys of anticipation sustain you. What a gift!
